FAO Guidelines for surveillance of pandemic H1N1/2009 and other influenza viruses in swine populations.
IANA - Influenza viruses circulating in humans have the potential to transmit to pigs. Canada and Argentina have reported the occurrence of H1N1/2009 influenza in a few pig herds, where the initial findings suggested that the pigs may have contracted the virus from workers who had been suffering from influenza-like illness. Influenza viruses circulating in humans do have the potential to transmit to pigs, just as any other more classical pig influenza viruses. Although, to date, there has been no evidence to suggest that pigs are implicated in the spread of the pandemic H1N1/2009 virus, FAO and OIE encourage national veterinary services to strengthen surveillance efforts for influenza infection in pig populations, to better understand the epidemiology of the disease and the genetic evolution of any isolated influenza viruses, where they may occur.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed guidelines for surveillance of pandemic H1N1/2009 influenza and classical swine flu in swine populations in order to help reduce the risk of transmission within the animal population or between animals and humans. These guidelines should be used complementarily with guidance released by other international technical organizations and national veterinary services to better achieve animal diseases control objectives.\
